Arizona State University Division II Club Baseball team traveled to San Marcos this weekend to begin conference play. Your Sun Devils took two out of three in the series and are currently in first place in District standings.
In the first game of a double header on Saturday the Devils jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st thanks to a Home Run from Austin Somerville. San Marcos replied with a two run bottom of the first thanks to a two run Home Run. In the second inning the Devils managed to score two more runs, but again San Marcos responded with a run of their own. From the second inning on the game remained tied 3-3 and headed into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth San Marcos managed to score a run winning game one with a score of 4-3.
After a lengthy delay waiting for umpires the Sun Devils trailed early thanks to a two run bottom of the 1st from San Marcos. In the top of the third the Devils finally broke through with a four run inning. Taking a 4-2 lead behind the pitching of Brad Crabtree. From the third inning on the Sun Devils were in control. Adding a run in the top of the 7th and winning with a final score of 5-2.
Game three again saw the Devils trail early. Down 2-0 after the 1st and 3-0 after four the Devils managed to tie the game with a three run top of the fifth. With the game tied 3-3 the Sun Devils managed to score runs in the 6th and 7th to take the lead and hold on to victory with the final score of 5-3 and taking the series 2-1.
Arizona State only needed the use of three pitchers. Brandon Smith, Brad Crabtree and Alex Craig threw 22 innings combined only giving up 9 runs combined.
ASU’s 3-5 hitters combined for 8 RBI’s in the three games.
Sun Devil defense only had two errors all weekend compared to the fall contest against San Marcos in which the Devils had 13 errors.
Arizona State’s next twelve games and next fifteen out of eighteen will all be home contest. With the lone away series against San Diego in April.
Sun Devils continue conference play this weekend as they take on GCU for a weekend series at Gene Autry.
After ASU takes on GCU the Sun Devils have a two weekend break as student athletes will have Spring Break off.
